Reactions from Mayo's draw against Galway in Oscar Traynor Cup

Mayo manager Joe Kelly and players Jordan Loftus and Cathal Coyne react to getting caught at the death by neigbours

Reactions from Mayo's draw against Galway in Oscar Traynor Cup

Joe Kelly (Mayo Manager)

“It’s sickening to concede a goal in the 96th minute. We had the exact game-plan as we had in Galway last year when we won 4-1; our tactic was to let them have the ball and hit them on the counter. But we never built up that cushion today. It’s small margins. They had as much of the ball last year in Galway as they had today, but the difference was we didn’t have a second goal and the reality was we starTed dropping deeper and deeper to protect that single goal lead, as the match went on. We kept our shape and restricted them to chances from set pieces.”

Jordan Loftus (Mayo captain)

“It was a poor performance from us today. It was a tough surface to play on, obviously the game that was played immediately beforehand, didn’t help. It was a tough game and I think a draw is a fair result. We invited pressure and the pressure told, and I think Galway were worthy of a point . We weren’t tired – it's just such a big pitch – too big really. I’ve always said it and I keep saying it, the pitch is too big for amateur players and it should be taken in a bit and shortened as well. But we’re not tired. And we’re a young side so no excuses. It could have gone either way. We might have got a second and they had chances and we’ll take the draw.”

Cathal Coyne (Man of the Match)

“We’re very disappointed to concede so late. I thought we had it won. We were solid defensively but maybe we sat in too much at the end and invited them on to us. When we went one-nil up we probably sat back a bit too much and invited the pressure. But overall, we’re happy enough with the point as we still top the group and it's all to play for now in the last game.”
