THERE were goals galore but mixed results for the Mayo teams who played in the second round of the FAI Junior Cup on Sunday.
Westport United, Castlebar Celtic and Ballyheane are the only teams left to carry the Mayo Super League flag in the competition after four games which saw Mayo teams score and concede 30 goals.
As expected, reigning Super League, Connacht Junior Cup, Calor Super Cup and Westaro Cup champions enjoyed a straightforward 6-1 win over Strand Celtic from Sligo.
Goals from Dylan Edwards and a brace from Mark Cunningham had Stevie Gavin’s men 3-0 up at half-time before Conor McKeon clawed one back from the penalty spot for the guests.
However, Celtic doubled their lead before the end with goals from Brian Walsh, Jason Hunt and Fionn Mahon to round off the win in a rainy Celtic Park.
Kiltimagh and Ballyheane enjoyed contrasting fortunes in their respective goal-fests.
Ballyheane welcomed Cartron United to mid-Mayo, where the two-time Super League champions prevailed after an eleven-goal thriller.
Nathan Reilly-Doyle, Aaron Dunleavey and Jack Tuffy had Ballyheane 3-1 up by half-time.
However, the drama was only just beginning as their Sligo guests levelled the game by the 54th minute.
Ballyheane saw their manager Ashley Stevenson and coach Joe Redmond yellow-carded shortly before Gavin Sweeney put Cartron 4-3 up in the 83rd minute.
The Ballyheane players kept their heads and equalised moments later through Reilly-Doyle to send the game to extra time.
Dylan Stevenson and Donal Gallagher exchanged goals in the first period, before Stevenson popped up with the long-awaited winner in the 108th minute, leaving the home side with a 6-5 win.
Further north, there was heartbreak for Kiltimagh/Knock United, who were beaten by a 94th-minute goal from Ballisodare United.
The Mayo men went 3-0 down in the first half before hitting back with goals from Jack O’Connor and David Owusu before the break.
KKU fought on throughout the second half only to see their hopes shattered by Gary Anderson in the dying seconds.
