Mayo began their 2024/25 Oscar Traynor Cup journey with a comfortable win over Sligo/Leitrim in the Sunday afternoon sunshine of McSharry Park.
Mayo’s lack of a pre-tournament challenge was obvious in their performance and manager, Joe Kelly, will be happy to come away with a win, knowing his side will have to be much better when they face Galway in Umbro Park in the second round, on November 10.
Jordan Loftus got the last touch to a goalmouth scramble to nudge Mayo in front on 18 minutes – a lead they took to the half-time break.
Eight minutes in to the second half, Jason Hunt tapped in from the back post to put Mayo two up; three minutes later Donogh Crowne pulled one back for Sligo/Leitrim with a fine strike. Hunt was upended in the box and Loftus slotted home the penalty to make it 3-1 and substitute, Jack O’Connor made it four near the end.
Mayo were solid at the back with Harrison Quinn putting in a man-of-the-match performance. Johnny Cocozza livened things up when he came on. Mayo could have had four more and will have to sharpen up for the next test.
