A frustrated Mayo FC were left to count the cost of yet another slow start as Athlone Town hit them for six on Sunday afternoon.
Athlone couldn’t believe their look as they raced into a three-goal lead with only ten minutes on the clock.
The opener came on five minutes as Darragh Keenan saw his free kick evade everyone in the box and find its way into the far corner. The visiting side then added another two in quick succession as Cathal Costello latched on to an under-hit pass and rounded the onrushing Mayo goalkeeper to slot home with ease. Sam Meegan fired in from close range after the Mayo defence failed to clear the ball on more than one occasion to put the visitors out of sight.
To their credit, the home side made a contest of it in the second period and pulled a goal back thanks to a thunderous Cillian Reilly free kick. Mayo were committing plenty of bodies forward to try and claw back another goal, but whatever hope they had of taking any points was extinguished when Sam Meegan slotted home Athlone’s fourth. The visitors added two more in the final stages of the game, compounding a tough afternoon all around for the home side.
