Three goals from three corners were enough for Sligo Rovers to secure three points and defeat Mayo FC in Umbro Park this afternoon.

A slow-paced first half, dampened by the heavy rain, meant that both teams struggled to come by promising chances. Sligo Rovers hit the post in the 20th minute, while Mayo hit the uprights with 32 minutes gone. The home side were the better team in the opening period. Muireann Nolan led from the middle of the pitch, while their defence proved difficult to break down.

The second half was where Sligo flourished. With 58 minutes on the clock, Sligo’s Rachel Flynn sent a corner ball into the box which Mayo could not deal with, and Flynn saw her corner end up in the back of the net.

Only three minutes later, Flynn headed to the corner once again. This time her in-swinger fell to the feet of Sadbh Maguire, who fired the ball past Sarah Gallagher to give Sligo a 2-0 lead.

The Mayo side pushed numbers forward in search of a comeback, but it was not to be.

As the game entered the injury time, the visitors were awarded a final corner and this time, which Rachel Flynn stood over. This time a deflection from Roisin Horkan saw the ball end up in the back of the net before the final whistle.
