Manulla produced their best performance of the season to give themselves a chance of survival in the Mayo Super League, with a comfortable win over Ballinrobe.
If this was Manulla’s best performance, it was Ballinrobe’s worst. They were very poor – leaderless and rudderless. Numerous times they had chances and players sought to pass instead of taking on the responsibility. Their key marksman, JP O’Gorman was out taking throws and corners.
Their plight wasn’t helped with injuries to key players. Danny O’Toole left proceedings early and a dislocated finger meant that ’keeper and captain, Seán Shaughnessy, had to retire early too. The loss and results elsewhere drags Ballinrobe back into the relegation battle.
But this was Manulla’s day. From about 20 minutes in, they dominated this match. They were hungry; they were organised and they were deserving of the points.
Ballinrobe went in front four minutes in when O’Gorman drove home a penalty. Matty Nolan equalised eight later – also from the spot. O’Gorman got a second – only to see it cancelled out by Ruairi Henry’s fine strike.
Nolan gave Manulla a second-half lead and Man of the Match, Conor Brett sealed it.
