Ballyheane produced their best performance of the season, coming from two down to claim the points on a wet night on home soil. Celtic needed the win to clinch back-to-back league titles; they’ll have to wait a few more days after this below-par performance.
Dylan Edwards put Celtic in front after fifteen minutes when he got in unattended at the back post as the Ballyheane defence admired Basho Hay’s cross. Jordan Loftus doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Hay was fouled by Seán Rabbette.
Celtic, unbeaten in the league in two years, were two up and that should have been it. But Celtic haven’t been themselves of late and several key players were below par on the night.
Ballyheane got one back before the break when a greasy ball saw Morris’s seemingly harmless effort deceive Hester. Dan Purcell levelled it after the hour, when he finished well after Ben Edeh did the heavy lifting, and goalkeeper, John Vahey, saw his long-range free kick beat Hester with ten remaining.
To compound Celtic’s poor night Mark Cunningham saw red at the death.
