Tuohy Cup Final
Castlebar Celtic 1
M Rattigan 52
Westport United 0
In Milebush
IT was no Mayo ‘El Clasico’, but that will matter little to Castlebar Celtic, who added to their club’s bulging trophy cabinet with a one-goal win over their arch-rivals in the Touhy Cup final this afternoon.
Chances from play were rare, therefore it seemed only fitting that the winning goal came from a corner when defender, Mark Rattigan, bundled home the game’s only goal early in the second half.
It was obvious from an early stage that this wasn’t going to be a classic.
Both teams played an uninspiring, long-ball-laden brand of soccer that did little to excite the fans - save for a few rasping attempts on goal that narrowly missed the target.
As expected, the first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
It only took seven minutes, however, for ‘Celtic to break the deadlock when Mark Rattigan drove the ball into the net from a corner before reeling away in delight.
The tempo of the game increased marginally, and both teams definitely had their chances.
Peter Basquille made two impressive saves to deny a young Westport United an equaliser, but Castlebar Celtic’s sturdy rearguard kept a clean sheet and kept another cup in Castlebar.
A full report, plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News Sport.
