Westport United have leapfrogged Ballina Town in the Super League table with an impressive home win.

United were rarely troubled as Kevin Kitterick and Caoimhin O'Toole hit the target as the hosts prevailed over a Ballina Town team that were missing some key players.

Kevin McNamara's team, who exited the Mayo Calor Gas Super Cup to Conn Rangers on penalties almost 48 hours previously, were much improved and better organised on Saturday evening.

Their dominance was far from overwhelming in a scoreless first half, but the West Mayo lads were still the better team, particularly at midfield.

United broke the deadlock early in the second half when Dylan O'Malley set up Kevin Kitterick with a neat pass before Kitterick finished to give them a deserved lead.

They doubled their lead on 57 minutes when Kitterick turned provider for Caoimhin O'Toole to hit the net from close range.

Ballina Town struggled to create any serious chances and may have gone further behind were it not for some very good saves by their 'keeper Emmet Peyton.

Westport United started well and finished even better to put a positive end to an eventful 48 hours for their Super League squad. They now sit second in the league table on goal difference - ahead of Ballina Town, who have a game in hand.

A full report, plus reaction from the Westport United camp, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News Sport.
