A cup game which saw six goals - including an own goal from one of the most experienced defenders in Mayo - had to be decided by penalties this evening.

In the end, Duane McDonnell sent Conn Ranger through to the semi-final of the Calor Gas Super Cup from the spot afterJack Dawson’s penalty miss came back to haunt Westport United.

It was an up-down, topsy-turvy sort of game, with United going 3-1 up at one point before Conn’ drew level to force extra time and then spot kicks.

The hosts opened the scoring when Joe Lawless directed the ball into his own net from a cross.

Kevin Ketterick got ‘United back level after 18 minutes before Dylan O’Malley put them 2-1 up before half-time.

Fionn O’Hora looked to have put the West Mayo side in a comfortable position when he scored in the 67th minute.

However, Conn Rangers got right back into it with goals from Eoin Prendergast and Peter Naughton to level the game in the 75th minute.

Both teams had chances in normal time and both periods of extra-time, but it ultimately came down to spot kicks.

The quality of penalties was superb, with Cian Halpin, Adam Nugent, Harrison Quinn and Caoimhin O’Toole hitting the target for Westport United.

Peter Naughton, Owen McNamara, Cian McHale and Sean Holmes did likewise for Conn Rangers before Duane McDonnell punished Jack Dawson’s miss and sent the Connsiders into a cup semi-final.
