This rescheduled game was decided a few minutes either side of half-time. A goalmouth scramble following a corner, saw Mark Cunningham credited with the goal that put Celtic in front at half-time. Four minutes after the restart, Fionn Mahon made it 2-0 and five minutes later, Jordan Loftus slotted home a penalty to make it three.
Substitute Luke Kelly came in and added two more to seal the win and claim another three points as Celtic march on. Ballinrobe need at least three more points for safety; they were always unlikely to get them at Celtic Park.
Buoyed up by three new signings from neighbours, Moyne Villa of the Galway League, Ballinrobe stayed in this game for about an hour. But they never put any threatening moves together and while they gave a spirited performance, they really didn’t lay a glove on the Mayo and Connacht champions.
Celtic gave a debut to new signing, Niall Brennan, one of the best junior footballers in the country. This time last year, the Ballymote native wore the Ballina Town colours, and he winters with Carbury in the Sligo Leitrim League. He’s an excellent addition to the Castlebar side and slotted in so well it looked like he was born in Celtic Park.
The sides meet again on Sunday – also in the league.
