Challenges of managing an inter-county team

It’s time consuming and there can be big gaps between games and access to players. These are similar issues in any representative side. However, on the plus side, as a coach it allows good time to analyse previous games and plan well for the next game.

Experience of the competition

Excellent. It’s very competitive. The standard is very high as you would expect. Setting a team up to play against the best players in junior football provides a great tactical challenge and tests your own team's style of play and principles. It’s the level any coach should want to be at.

Learnings during the competition

Every day is a school day in football. Whether it’s delivering a training session or managing in a game, learning is key. The competition has confirmed to me how difficult it is to get results at the highest level of junior football, and preparation is key. Sometimes with teams so close in ability, it’s the collective attitude within the squad that makes the difference. To create an environment where players from different clubs all gel together both on and off the pitch is very important.

Ambitions

I don’t have any clear ambitions other than to enjoy the present and coach at the highest level my schedule allows at any given time.

Challenges of managing an inter-county team

Limited access to players and managing their workload, taking account of their club commitments. Managing the time-gap between games and scheduling mid-week challenge games required to develop the team.

Experience of the competition

This is a competition I have been lucky to have played in and won, so it is close to my heart and I am delighted to be involved and enjoying every moment.

The top players in junior football are playing in this competition. To build a strong team spirit from players from numerous clubs is extremely important and something that we have worked on.

Learnings during the competition

Preparation has been hugely important. We brought the squad together early in September setting out the commitment required to be successful. The dedication that the players have given over the last seven to eight months has been exceptional and foundation for the success so far.
