MAYO have made history by becoming the first side from the county to reach the first Oscar Traynor Cup final since 1981.

A first-half goal from Dylan McKee and a Jack O’Connor goal in the opening minute of the second half proved the difference for Joe Kelly’s men against Sligo/Leitrim in this afternoon’s semi-final.

Mayo opened well and for ten minutes, took full advantage of the stiff breeze on their backs and pressed Sligo/Leitrim.

But worryingly for Mayo their neighbours then took control of the game and pressurised the Mayo defence for the following fifteen minutes.

Their dominance was reflected on the scoreboard after 16 minutes when Ryan McManus headed unchallenged from Mark Hannon’s free kick, after Cillian McGlade had fouled Malachy Spratt.

Similar questions could be asked of the Sligo rearguard, which allowed Dylan McKee to head-in Mayo’s response, unchallenged, from a corner on 23 minutes.

Mayo attacked from the restart and Ben Edeh set-up Jack O’Connor to put Mayo on top immediately after the break.

While Sligo/Leitrim huffed and puffed after that, they were unable to get anything clear cut from a solid Mayo defence where Mark Cunningham, Ioseph O’Reilly and Andrew Shally were to the fore.

A full report, plus reaction from Joe Kelly, Andrew Shally, Mark Cunningham and Cillian McGlade, will be carried in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
