Colts celebrate at the joy of rugby

Claremorris Colts RFC recently celebrated a decade and a half of rugby at a glittering awards banquet at The McWilliam Park Hotel. Among the highlights were the series of trophy and medal presentations to underage and adult teams.

The awards, sponsored by CBE, Claremorris were presented to all teenage and senior teams, with crystal trophies for Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and ‘Hail, Rain or Shine’ Player of the Year. Special trophies were also handed over to club, Youth and Players’ Player of the Year.

There was also a tribute made to the Colts Girls who represented Connacht at U-16 and U-18 interprovincial level during the season. Ruby Jennings, Maebh Smith, Aine Lynn and Kate Corcoran wore the green at U-16 level. Aoife Heaney and Ruby Jennings were part of the U-18 squad who won the Inter-Provnicials and Aoife also played on the Connacht 7s team who also captured the Inter-Pro title. Grace Kelly also played for Connacht in the Inter-Pro 7s series.

Fergal Byrne, Chairman, Claremorris Colts RFC outlined the history of the club since its formation and thanked all for their continued support, commitment and involvement in the club: “Without these contributions over the past 15 years, we would have not reached where we are today, and we continue to invest and develop facilities, improve training techniques and player quality.”

Established in 2009, the club now has over 360 members playing mini, youth and junior rugby. Less than ten years ago, the Colts Park playing and training pitches were developed at the Old Racecourse Grounds, just outside the town and is now the setting for all club activities.

Award winners were: U-13 Boys, Enna Glynn, John Foody, Matthew Sweeney; U-14 Boys, Jake Morley, Enda Heaney, Fionnan Kelly; U-16 Girls, Millie Ager, Sienna Campbell, Ruby Jennings; U-15 Boys, Eimhin Kenny, David Walsh, Tom Smyth; U-16 Boys, Sean Buckely, David Loughney, Nathaniel Cooney; U-18 Girls Alanna Nevin, Bronwyn Lockyer, Grace Kelly; U-17 Boys, Ronan Murphy, Michael Trench, Liam Smyth; U-18.5 Boys, Conor Byrne, Conor Prendergast, Michael Smyth; Senior, Adam Gleeson, James Kean, Shane Meehan; Senior Players’ Player of the Year, Cathal Heaney; Club Player of the Year, Danny Noone; Youth Player of the Year, Aoife Heaney.
