A day of glory beckons for Westport Rugby Club U-16 girls, who are to play Ballinasloe in the Connacht Cup final this Sunday (April 14)
As fate would have it, it’s the same opponent as in last year’s U-14 Connacht Cup decider. Back then, Westport found themselves losing in heart-breaking fashion by a single point after conceding a last-minute try. So a win against the old rivals Ballinasloe would not only bring the only cup silverware for the club this year, it would also be a day of redemption for the girls who featured in last year’s final.
“This game now is the culmination of a season where they worked hard, with wonderful coaches David Conway and Des Reidy who challenge and support the girls. It’s great to see the success and we are incredibly proud of our players,” Liz Brady, President of Westport RFC, told The Mayo News.

“The success of making it into a second Connacht Cup final in a row cannot be underestimated considering that it’s currently a young team. Most of the U-14 team that featured in the final last year moved up to the U-16s and have now made it to the final again. They have done really well. They just missed out on the league final.”
A supporter’s bus will accompany the Westport rugby girls to the final this Sunday, April 14, at 11am in the Dexcom Stadium, Galway.
