The response to our St Patrick’s Day photography competition was fantastic, proving there’s a wealth of readers around the county – and further afield – with an keen eye for a great shot. Well done to all those who entered.
After much deliberation, our judge, professional photographer Jay Meenan, plumped for a crowd shot that captures the spirit of the day perfectly. The picture (above) was taken by Westport resident Oliver Whyte Jnr. As the overall prizewinner, he receives a Kodak digital camera and case worth €150 (sponsored by Ash-ling Crafts, Westport), a prize that he kindly donated to the Quay NS, Westport.

ABSTRACT Taken by Grace Anne Lynch on Achill.

Oliver took the shot at the Westport parade. Clearly in focus is Roísín Reynolds enjoying a her vantage point on the shoulders of her father, Paul Reynolds. What makes the photo is the fact that Roísín, sporting her leprechaun hat and holding a green balloon, glanced at the camera just as the picture was being taken.
The other three pictures printed here were chosen by Jay as outstanding examples of amateur photography in the remaining categories of ‘parade pics’, ‘portraits’ and ‘abstract photos’.
