There was boxing glory for four Mayo fighters on the world stage over the weekend. Nell McLaughlin and Carlagh Peake won silver medals at the IBA World Youth Boxing Championships in Montenegro on Sunday. Eoghan Lavin won his third professional bout in succession in Birmingham on Saturday night and Belmullet's Rachel Lally fought her way to a deserved draw in her professional debut in Dubai.

McLaughlin and Peake were highly impressive all week as they boxed their way through the rounds all the way to their gold medal bouts on Sunday afternoon. McLaughlin from Eagle BC in Westport had produced a brilliant performance to outbox Turkey's Dilara Sak in the semi-final and went in against China's Zi Yi Bao in the gold medal bout. However, the Chinese woman went home with the prize despite the very best efforts of the talented Eagles fighter.

Peake was also highly-impressive all the way through the championships and produced some spectacular performances on the way to the final where she faced Yelyanur Turganova of Kazakhstan in the women’s 50kg decider. Once again, Peake boxed with style and precision but Turganova got the nod from the judges at the end.

Both silver medallists will return to Mayo homecomings today (Tuesday) with Peake being welcomed home in Ballyhaunis at 4.30pm and McLaughlin arriving back to Westport at 6pm.

In Birmingham on Saturday night, Lavin a former Irish amateur champion with Ballyhaunis BC showed everyone why he's so highly rated when he stopped France's Remi Scholer in the second round. Lavin is catching the eye of many seasoned observers and Saturday night's performance has elevated him to a new level in the game.

In Dubai, Lally boxed Elene Sikmashvili from Georgia in a super-middleweight contest. The Belmullet woman is a former Irish youth champion and showed great style and spirit in her first bout in the professional ranks. Many observers at ringside felt 'The Bullet from Belmullet' had won the contest but the judges disagreed and declared the bout a draw. Lally is already looking forward to her next bout in the pro ranks.
