A new outdoor theatre is set to open on Mayo’s coastline this June 26.

The open-air performance arena has been developed by Mulranny Arts Centre as part of its ongoing commitment to bringing live arts and performance to Ireland’s west coast.

Constructed using locally sourced and recycled materials, the specially designed venue is perched on a hillside overlooking Clew Bay, offering sweeping views across the Atlantic Ocean.

The arena will officially launch with a performance of ‘Grace’ on Friday, June 27, at 7 pm.

“It’s part faith and part pure hard work,” said Dea Birkett, Director of Achill Island-based Circus250, the company behind ‘Grace’.

“Building a new outdoor theatre on the west coast and creating a large-scale aerial circus production to inaugurate it might sound ambitious, but Mulranny Arts Centre has created not only the westernmost performance space in the country, but surely one of the most beautiful,” she said.

“From your seat, you look out across the waters once sailed by Grace O’Malley. Accompanied by live original music performed on traditional harp and fiddle, the production transports audiences into Grace’s 16th-century maritime world. Where else could you experience something like that?”
