A driver suspected of driving without insurance has had their car impounded by gardaí.

Tipperary Roads Policing Unit were on patrol in Cashel, Co Tipperary and were alerted to the car by the automatic number-plate recognition system in their jeep.

The car had no NCT or tax and was also uninsured, according to gardaí.

"We impounded it and the driver will face court at a later date," gardaí outlined on social media.

The automatic number-plate recognition system alerts gardaí to vehicles which haven't up to date insurance, tax or NCT disc displayed.

The system is widely available among garda road traffic units and has resulted in a number of arrests across the country.
