The Late Late Show rounded off its GAA special with a touching moment as presenter Patrick Kielty was surprised by his former minor All-Ireland winning team-mates from Down.

“I’ve been told there is a change of plans, this is not in the script,” he said. “I knew something was up and didn’t know what was up. This is a surprise, it says to read the autocue, Paddy, that’s what they are telling me to do.

“You may have heard me mention at least five times tonight, I do have an All-Ireland medal, yes I was a sub-goalie on the glorious Football Championship-winning Down minor team of 1987 and some of that team are here tonight.”

"You're our hero," a former team-mate told an emotional Kielty.

The Late Late Show presenter was a former Dundrum player and reserve keeper, at the age of 16, for the Down team which won the All-Ireland minor final in 1987.

It was recalled how Patrick Kielty's late father Jack was the first person the players saw in the tunnel after their victory. He told every member of the Down team how proud he was of them as tears of joy rolled down his face after he managed to reach the tunnel from his seat in the Hogan Stand.

"We will have a brandy for Jack tonight," one of Patrick's former team-mates promised.

The late Jack Kielty was shot dead during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in 1988 by members of the UFF, aged just 44.

"I can't believe ye got me," the show presenter said.

"I am the proudest man in Ireland to be here on the stage with you guys here tonight," Kielty told his former team-mates as the show ended on a high.
