Patients are advised to contact their GP or out-of-hours service where possible as hospital prioritises urgent care and time-sensitive procedures

Mayo University Hospital is warning patients of extremely high pressure at its Emergency Department today (Tuesday, September 1), with long waiting times for those requiring admission to a hospital bed.

Patients are currently experiencing lengthy waits to be transferred from the Emergency Department to a ward bed, with the hospital apologising for the delays.

The hospital said large numbers of people are attending the Emergency Department and many require admission for ongoing treatment.

Due to the ongoing pressure, Mayo University Hospital is also reviewing elective surgeries, with some procedures deferred. Urgent and time-sensitive operations are being prioritised.

The hospital acknowledged that the delays are difficult for patients and their families and apologised for the inconvenience and distress being caused.

People are being asked to attend their GP or out-of-hours service in the first instance, where possible, and only attend the Emergency Department when faced with an emergency situation.

The hospital is also reminding the public that community pharmacists can provide expert advice and over-the-counter treatments for a wide range of minor illnesses.

Mayo University Hospital said it remains committed to treating everyone who presents to the Emergency Department. Patients who are seriously ill or injured are assessed and treated as a priority, while those whose conditions are not considered urgent may face longer waits.
