An appeal was lodged by a resident who lives adjacent to the site, who raised concerns about safety, privacy and noise.

An appeal has been lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála against the retention of a staff and customer overflow car park serving a supermarket in north Mayo.

In February this year, M&J Carabine lodged an application to Mayo County Council seeking retention permission for the car parking facility on a vacant site adjacent to Centra in Bangor Erris.

Retention permission was subsequently granted, subject to seven conditions. These included requirements for appropriate waste management, while the operating hours of the car park were restricted to between 6:30 am and 9:30 pm, Monday to Sunday inclusive.

However, an appeal was lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála on August 20 by a local resident who lives adjacent to the site.

In her appeal, the woman raised a number of concerns regarding the impact of the car park on her property and quality of life.

She raised concerns regarding noise from vehicles entering and leaving the car park, as well as noise from people using the facility. She also raised privacy concerns, stating that vehicles are parked facing towards her bedroom window.

Safety was another concern highlighted in the appeal. The resident said her home heating oil tank is located outside the hedge separating her property from the site and expressed concern that it could pose a potential fire hazard.

She also expressed concerns that the development could negatively affect the value of her property.

A decision on the appeal is due to be made by An Coimisiún Pleanála in December.
