Mayo club badminton makes big return with drama aplenty

Inter-club badminton returned to Mayoon Wednesday, November 19, for the first time in several years, as Ballina hosted Crimlin at Ballina Community Sports Centre.
The home side made a strong start to the G/F Mixed Team competition, recording a 6–1 win in the opening leg.
Ballina established early control through the singles. S. Gopalakrishnan defeated C. Flynn 21–12, 21–18, followed by J. Callaghan securing a 21–9, 21–14 victory over R. Moran in the Ladies Singles.
In the doubles, Ballina continued to build momentum. S. Gopalakrishnan / V. Balakrishnan won 21–11, 21–12 against L. Murphy / E. McHale, while J. Callaghan / T. Rose overcame L. Duffy / C. Phelan 21–14, 21–16 in the women’s tie.
The hosts added another point in the first mixed doubles, where V. Balakrishnan / A. Jordan won 21–12, 21–15 against E. McHale / C. Phelan. Crimlin responded in the second mixed, as L. Duffy / C. Flynn claimed a hard-fought win, defeating S. Jose / E. Bolger 21–13, 19–21, 21–10.
The final match went to Ballina, with L. Varughese / T. Rose winning 21–15, 17–21, 21–17 against L. Murphy / R. Moran. The return leg will take place in the coming weeks at Crimlin Community Centre, where the hosts will look to keep the tie alive.
