Over €8 million in Sports Capital funding announced for Mayo sports clubs 

Funding has been allocated for the upgrade of floodlights at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park

MORE than 60 Mayo sports clubs have been allocated over €8.2 million in funding from the Sports Capital Programme. 

A record number of individual awards were given out under this year’s Sports Capital programme, which allocated over €250 million in funding to clubs across the country

The Mayo League Community Stadium in Milebush received the highest individual award in Mayo, with an allocation of €406,497 to fund the upgrade of the stadium. 

Thirty-three Mayo clubs were allocated €6,173,447 from the Community Sport Facilities Fund. The highest individual award from this stream was granted to Charlestown GAA Club, who received €200,000 for floodlighting at the newly-opened Colm Horkan Memorial Park. 

Mayo GAA also received €196,942 for the upgrade of floodlights at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. 

In addition, four Mayo clubs received €59,915 in Additional Equipment Funding: Ballinrobe Town AFC (€22,325), Ballyhaunis Town FC (€13,249), Burrishoole GAA (€7,716) and Crossmolina AFC (€16,625). 

Mayo Oireachtas members have broadly welcomed this year’s Sports Capital allocation. 

Minister of State, Alan Dillon commented: “To those whose applications were deemed invalid by the department, I will ensure that full feedback is available and assure them of my support going forward.”

Senator Lisa Chambers welcomed the €351,100 allocated for the incomplete rock climbing wall at Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar. 

 “The climbing wall at Lough Lannagh will be a huge asset to our community, offering a state-of-the-art facility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities,” she stated. 

Minister of State, Dara Calleary described this year’s Sports Capital programme as ‘an unprecedented level of sports funding and will prove transformative for sports clubs in our communities’. 

Deputy Michael Ring also welcomed the funding, which he said would be used to improve infrastructure such as playing and training facilities, astro-turfs, handball alleys, walking tracks, hurling walls, and floodlights.
