THIS was a heavyweight contest which promised much and delivered little of any real quality. With both teams joint-top of the table with three wins from three, and Westport United (along with Ballina Town) seen as one of only two credible challengers to the champions, this was in some ways a six-pointer. But the match, while entertaining, didn’t live up to the expectation of the large crowd, mainly due to the fact that neither side played with an out and out striker.

Jason Hunt terrorised the Westport full backs, but his crosses were more likely to be turned into the net by a Westport defender than a Celtic player. At the other end, Westport played the ball in over the top, but lacked a cutting edge. Defenders, Noah Massey (Westport) and Cathal Coyne (Celtic) were in top form, and behind them, Gary Cunningham and Stefan Hester were solid, though the Celtic stopper did kick a lot of balls out of play over the ninety minutes.

Jordan Loftus for Celtic, and Kevin Kitterick for Westport, had good chances to nick it, but a draw was probably the fairest outcome.
