Westport twins win gold and bronze for Ireland

TWO of Mayo’s most talented young athletes have added to their bulging trophy collection by coming first and third in SIAB Schools Cross Country International Competition at the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin.

Freya Renton of Westport’s Sacred Heart School took home the gold with a time of 10.27 while her twin sister , Holly, won bronze with a time of 10.52 in the Junior Girls category.

Freya placed first 23 seconds ahead over the next fastest competitor, England’s Kitty Scott, while Holly came just two seconds behind Scott.

A total of 40 athletes represented Ireland at the competition, which also involved competitors from Wales, Scotland and England.

The Westport AC members also recently won silverware at the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships - Freya and Holly also claimed first and third on that occasion.
