Exciting new head-coach appointed ahead of All Ireland League

Top rugby coach appointed by Ballina

Ballina RFC have signaled their intent this morning by confirming the appointment of Brian 'Beano' McClearn as their new head coach for the 2023-24 season. He comes to Heffernan Park after filling similar roles at NUIG, Galwegians, Connacht Women and has also worked with the Irish U-18 squad.

A native of Abbey-Duniry in East Galway, McClearn joined Galwegians in 1999 from the Nenagh Ormond RFC. McClearn was a long-standing member of their senior squad.

A lock forward and line out specialist, he captained the Galwegians Senior XV to promotion from All Ireland League Division 2A to Division 1A in two consecutive seasons.

He now assumes the mantle at Heffernan Park where he succeeds the recently departed Joe McDonnell.

McClearn will be joined by recently retired player Aiden McNulty who assumes an assistant coaching role as he embarks on a rugby career off the field.

It's hoped that his knowledge of the senior squads, and his deep insight into the club culture will facilitate a quick bedding-in period for the head coach.

Ballina's first challenge will be a local derby away to Sligo RFC in the Connacht Senior League on August 19, before the All Ireland League recommences in the autumn.

McClearn said: “It is a tremendous honour to be appointed head coach at Ballina. The club, are determined to cement their position in the All Ireland League, and as the only senior rugby club in Mayo and one of five in Connacht.

"My job is to make sure that all of the playing resources at this prestigious club are maximised. I look forward to working with a team of committed and tremendously talented young players, I cannot wait to get started."
