Upgrades in Tourmakeady, Claremorris, Ballyhaunis and Newport to support housing growth, improve services and protect the environment

Uisce Éireann has confirmed a series of water and wastewater infrastructure projects for Mayo as part of a nationwide investment programme following the approval of a new regulatory framework for water services up to 2029.

The final Revenue Control 4 (RC4) decision by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities sets out the funding and performance framework for water and wastewater services over the next four years.

As part of the programme, several significant projects are progressing across Mayo, including a major upgrade to the Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant, wastewater treatment upgrades in Claremorris and Ballyhaunis, and the development of a new wastewater treatment plant in Newport.

Work is continuing on the €29 million upgrade of the Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant in Tourmakeady, which started last year. Once completed, the project will provide additional water capacity equivalent to approximately 20,000 new homes across South and West Mayo, supporting future housing and economic growth in the region.

Meanwhile, construction is also progressing on an €18 million upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant in Claremorris, which began in late 2025 and is aimed at increasing capacity and improving environmental performance.

In Newport, plans for a new wastewater treatment plant have taken a significant step forward after the project recently secured a Maritime Usage Licence from the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA). Uisce Éireann said work is continuing on the Preliminary Business Case, with assessments of treatment options, locations and network layouts progressing well and remaining on schedule for completion later this year.

Uisce Éireann said local communities will be informed as projects advance through planning and construction stages.

Speaking after the announcement, Uisce Éireann’s Director of Strategy, Resilience and Regulation, Justin Johnston said this creates a strong framework for delivering improved services nationwide.

“We welcome the CRU’s determination, which provides a clear and robust framework for the delivery of water services over the next four years. It sets an ambitious agenda for Uisce Éireann,” he said.

“Our focus now is on delivery—progressing critical infrastructure, managing our operational and capital expenditure responsibly and efficiently, and meeting the targets set by our regulator.”

Uisce Éireann’s Director of Asset Management, Sean Laffey said the investment programme would see hundreds of projects delivered across Ireland.

“This investment will support housing delivery by enabling new connections and addressing infrastructure constraints in key growth areas,” he said. “Communities across the country will see further evidence of projects being advanced as we work to increase capacity, improve reliability and meet our environmental obligations.”

Nationally, the RC4 determination provides for €13.6 billion in investment in water infrastructure, with further proposals expected later this year under the National Development Plan.

For Mayo, the planned investments are expected to strengthen water and wastewater services, support new housing development and improve environmental protection.
