Co Mayo is set to benefit from a major new tourism initiative following Government approval of plans to develop an all-island American Presidents Trail.
The project, announced as part of the America250 commemorative programme, will highlight the ancestral links between Ireland and 23 former US presidents — including Joe Biden, who has strong family connections to Ballina in Mayo.
Fine Gael TD Edward Timmins, who first proposed the idea, said the trail represents a significant opportunity for rural communities after it received Cabinet approval.
“This recognises something many Irish communities already know — that the story of 23 American presidents has deep roots in Ireland,” he said. “The trail will give visitors a compelling reason to explore beyond the traditional tourist hotspots.”
The initiative is being led by Tourism Minister Patrick O’Donovan and will see ancestral sites across the island identified and marked with native trees and information panels, creating a network of heritage locations linked to the White House.
For Mayo, the project is expected to further strengthen its appeal to American tourists, particularly those tracing their Irish ancestry. The county has already attracted global attention in recent years through President Biden’s visit and his well-documented Mayo roots.

Deputy Timmins said the initiative could bring significant economic benefits.
“American visitors come to Ireland in huge numbers every year, many searching for a connection to their heritage,” he said. “This trail provides a meaningful way to explore those links while driving tourism into rural areas like Mayo.”
The trail forms part of the wider America250 programme, marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. It is being delivered in partnership with Government departments, local authorities and organisations North and South.
“America250 is a partnership between national bodies, creative communities, historians, educators and local authorities,” said Minister O’Donovan about the America250 initiative. “I encourage everyone to use this programme as an opportunity to acknowledge and remember the transformative events of 250 years ago and explore the remarkable influence of our ancestors, north and south, on the formation of the United States.”
The project is also expected to boost community pride, with local areas directly involved in showcasing their historical connections to prominent American figures.
With millions of people in the United States claiming Irish ancestry, the American Presidents Trail — and the America250 programme — is seen as a major opportunity to grow tourism and strengthen transatlantic ties, with Mayo positioned as a key destination along the route.
