A woman appeared in court charged with the theft of cash from people in Mayo University Hospital
A BALLYCROY woman appeared before Castlebar District Court charged with the theft of over €3,000 in cash from people in Mayo University Hospital.
Helen Deane (41) of Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy appeared before Castlebar District Court where she was charged with five counts of theft from people in Mayo University Hospital on various dates between April 2025 and August 2025.
Detective Garda Leo Heaney told the court that at 9.28am this morning (Wednesday, April 1), he arrested Ms Deane with the purpose of charging her with the offences and that she made no reply following the caution to all the charges.
Judge Vincent Deane was informed that the DPP had directed trial on indictment and Ms Deane was released on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on May 6 for service of the book of evidence.

All of the offences are alleged to have taken place in Mayo University Hospital with the first offence allegedly occurring on April 14, 2025 with Ms Deane charged with the theft of €1,220 in cash from a woman.
It is also alleged that on June 2, 2025, Ms Deane stole €289 in cash from a woman and on July 8, 2025 it is alleged she stole a handbag worth €60 and €40 in cash from another woman.
On August 6, 2025, it is alleged that Ms Deane took €250 in cash from a man in the A&E of the hospital and between August 14 and August 15, 2025 she is alleged to have stolen €1,300 in cash from a woman in the hospital.
