Garda Tony McCabe and Reserve Garda Ciarán Collins speaking at the 2026 National Road Safety Conference, where they highlighted their viral campaign on distracted driving.
Two Mayo Gardaí have taken centre stage at a national road safety conference, sharing their work on a widely viewed campaign aimed at tackling distracted driving.
Garda Tony McCabe and Reserve Garda Ciarán Collins addressed the 2026 ‘Safer Roads’ National Road Safety Conference, held at the Gleneagle Arena on March 11 and 12.
The two officers outlined the impact of their road safety videos — particularly a campaign focusing on the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.
The initiative has gained significant attention, with one video reaching more than 550,000 views, helping to raise awareness of the risks associated with distracted driving.
The pair also took part in a panel discussion alongside representatives from other agencies involved in ongoing efforts to further reduce collisions and improve driver awareness.
The conference brought together a wide range of stakeholders including government representatives, local authorities, road safety experts, educators and emergency responders to discuss best practices and new approaches to improving safety on Irish roads.

Reserve Garda Collins was recently honoured with a Special Recognition Award by Seán Canney at a Road Safety Authority ceremony at Croke Park, acknowledging the impact of his work in public safety awareness.
The video campaign has been widely praised for its powerful messaging and its role in encouraging safer behaviour among road users.
Gardaí are continuing to urge drivers across Co. Mayo and beyond to play their part by avoiding distractions behind the wheel — particularly the use of mobile phones while driving.
