Mayo News journalist, Michael Commins, will be honoured with a Service to Country Music Award, at the national Hot Country TV Awards Concert on next Monday night, March 9, 2026 in Hotel Kilmore, Cavan. Michael is a well-known and respected figure in Irish media, best recognised for his work as a presenter with Midwest Radio.
With a career spanning broadcasting, songwriting and newspaper writing, he has built a reputation for thoughtful storytelling, strong cultural awareness and an authentic connection with audiences across the west of Ireland and beyond. As a presenter on Midwest Radio, Michael is valued for his engaging on-air style and his ability to connect local stories with wider themes. His broadcasting work reflects a deep appreciation of community life, music and the lived experiences of people in the region. In addition to radio, Michael is an accomplished songwriter, with his work reflecting a strong sense of place, emotion and narrative.
His songs, recorded by so many well known names on the Irish scene, as well as by John Rex Reeves, nephew of the legendary American singer, Jim Reeves, and Leona Williams, a former wife of country legend, Merle Haggard, draw inspiration from everyday life, relationships and the Irish landscape, resonating with listeners through honesty and lyrical clarity.
Michael is also an experienced newspaper writer, contributing articles that combine insight, reflection and a strong command of language. His writing demonstrates a keen eye for detail and an ability to capture the essence of people, events and cultural moments. Across all mediums, Michael continues to be a distinctive creative voice from County Mayo - one rooted in community, shaped by experience, and committed to meaningful communication. Michael will be honoured for his Outstanding Service to Irish country music during the Hot Country TV awards concert in association with Galway Irish Crystal in Hotel Kilmore, Cavan.
