New Mayo town transport plan to be discussed by local residents

Local residents are being encouraged to help shape the future of transport and active travel in Ballyhaunis, as details of a new transport study go on public display this week.

Dara Calleary Ballyhaunis transport plan

Minister Calleary invites public to review new transport plan for Ballyhaunis.

Minister Dara Calleary has urged people in the area to make submissions on the proposed Ballyhaunis Transport Plan, describing it as an important opportunity to influence how the town develops in the years ahead.

The plans and particulars of the Transport Study will be available for inspection from Friday, February 27, 2026 until Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Documents can be viewed at Mayo County Council locations including Ballyhaunis Library on Clare Street and the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District Office at the Claremorris Area Office on Kilcolman Road.

The study can also be viewed online via the Mayo County Council Active Travel section.

An in-person public information event on the proposed Transport Study will take place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 from 4pm to 7pm at Ballyhaunis Community Hall on Upper Main Street, giving residents an opportunity to engage directly with council officials and planners.

Deputy Calleary said it is vital that local voices are heard before the plan is finalised.

“This is your opportunity to help shape the future of Ballyhaunis,” he said.

The transport study is expected to examine measures aimed at improving road safety, traffic flow and connectivity, as well as encouraging more sustainable modes of travel such as walking and cycling.

The final date for submissions or observations is 4.30pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Submissions received after that deadline will not be considered.

Residents, businesses and community groups across Ballyhaunis are now being encouraged to review the plans and make their views known before the closing date.
