Minister Dara Calleary announced proposed redevelopment plans for The Quay in Ballina, which include new water sports facilities and upgraded public amenities
Plans for a major redevelopment of The Quay in Ballina have been formally announced, with Minister Dara Calleary describing the project as a transformative step for the riverside location and for North Mayo tourism.
The ambitious proposed development includes new boating and water sports facilities, upgraded public toilets and changing areas, refurbishment of the Kennedy Glasgow Centre, and extensions to existing commercial units.
Plans also feature soft landscaping and planting works, along with new pedestrian crossings to improve accessibility and safety in the area.
Welcoming the progression of the plans, Minister Calleary said the redevelopment would be a “game-changing development” for The Quay with enormous untapped potential. He noted that the area has long been recognised as a key asset for Ballina, both for local recreation and as a draw for visitors exploring the River Moy and surrounding coastline.

The proposals aim to enhance the area’s attractiveness as a hub for outdoor activities and water sports, while also supporting local enterprise through the expansion of commercial space. Improved pedestrian infrastructure and landscaping are intended to create a safer and more welcoming environment for families, walkers and tourists.
Members of the public can view the detailed plans at the Ballina Municipal District Office from February 27 to March 27. The documents are also available online via the local authority planning portal.
Submissions and observations can be made online or in writing to the Senior Planner at Áras an Chontae, The Mall, Castlebar, up to 5pm on April 10.
If approved, the redevelopment would mark a significant investment in Ballina’s waterfront, reinforcing the town’s reputation as one of Mayo’s key tourism and recreation destinations.
