Minister Dillon said Mayo is leading the way in community-driven environmental action.
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed €43,871 in funding for three Mayo environmental and biodiversity projects under the Peatlands and Natura Community Engagement Scheme.
Nationally, €1.1 million has been allocated to 53 community-led initiatives supporting endangered species research, peatland restoration, and the removal of invasive species.
Minister Dillon said the investment reflects the outstanding commitment of Mayo’s environmental groups and volunteers, who continue to deliver high-impact projects that protect our natural heritage and strengthen local climate action.
Three Mayo initiatives have been approved:
The Great Yellow Bumblebee Project / Belmullet Tidy Towns – Mullet Machair Wildflower Seed Futures (€18,000). Funding will support the conservation of the endangered Great Yellow Bumblebee through wildflower seed collection, propagation, and habitat enhancement across the Mullet Peninsula.
CALL – Climate Action Louisburgh Locality – Charraig Bhán Bog Restoration Project (Phase 2) and Scoping New Engagement Opportunities (€13,100). This project will continue the restoration of the Charraig Bhán bog, improving biodiversity, carbon storage, and water retention, while exploring new ways to involve the community in climate action.
Mayo Irish Whale and Dolphin Group – Cetacean Presence and Activity Patterns in Blacksod Bay (€12,771). Research will focus on whale and dolphin activity in Blacksod Bay, including analysis of live stranding events, contributing to national understanding of marine mammal behaviour and conservation needs.
Minister Dillon said: “Mayo is leading the way in community-driven environmental action. These initiatives highlight the best of Mayo’s environmental leadership. From protecting one of Ireland’s rarest pollinators, to restoring vital peatlands, to advancing marine research in Blacksod Bay, our communities are driving meaningful action on biodiversity and climate.”
He added that the national scheme plays a crucial role in empowering local groups: “This €1.1 million investment supports practical, science-based projects that deliver real results. I am proud to see Mayo securing €43,871 for work that will have long-lasting benefits for our environment and our communities.”
Minister Dillon congratulated all three Mayo recipients and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting environmental and community initiatives across the county.
