A leading Mayo engineering company has reinforced its commitment to supporting future talent with the launch of a new third-level scholarship.
Cunningham Civil & Marine, based in Westport, has awarded its inaugural Cunningham Civil & Marine Engineering Scholarship to Nicola Latham, a first-year civil engineering student at the University of Galway.
The scholarship provides financial assistance and industry recognition to students who demonstrate strong academic performance and commitment to the profession, and will support recipients throughout their full honours degree.
The award was formally presented at the University of Galway Donor Recognition event on December 10, 2025, by company directors Eoghan Cunningham, Danielle Cunningham and Richard Browne. The initiative marks the beginning of a 10-year collaboration between the Westport-based firm and the university.

Civil engineering plays a central role in developing sustainable communities and resilient infrastructure. However, the sector continues to face challenges around participation and diversity.
The new scholarship aims to help address this imbalance by encouraging talented students to pursue careers in engineering and by increasing female participation in the industry.
“We are proud to support students like Nicola as they begin their engineering careers,” said Danielle Cunningham. She added that supporting young people entering the profession is vital for its future.
Speaking about receiving the award, Nicola said she was initially unsure she would be successful.
“I was delighted when I saw there was an opportunity to apply for a Civil Engineering Scholarship at the start of my degree in University of Galway,” she said.“Getting the call to say I had been awarded the scholarship was a huge shock and I honestly could not believe it.”

Nicola also encouraged other young women to pursue opportunities in engineering and STEM fields.
“As a female studying in STEM, I would encourage other females to put themselves forward for opportunities that may arise. A huge thank you to Danielle, Eoghan and Richard for believing in me,” she added.
Cunningham Civil & Marine employs more than 80 construction professionals and operates nationwide, with additional offices in Dublin and Galway. The company has delivered complex marine and civil engineering projects across Ireland, including major works at Dublin, Cork and Greenore ports.
The scholarship reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to investing in education and supporting the next generation of engineers, while strengthening links between industry and third-level institutions.
