Mayo attraction gains autism-friendly accreditation to boost accessibility for all

Major milestone for Westport Estate attraction as partnership with Westport Autism Friendly Town strengthens accessibility and inclusion.

Westport Estate now features a range of practical, sensory-aware measures across the estate.

Westport Estate has officially achieved Autism-Friendly Accreditation, marking a significant step forward in its commitment to accessibility and inclusion for visitors in Co Mayo.

The accreditation was secured through a partnership with Westport Autism Friendly Town (WAFT) and recognises the estate’s efforts to create a supportive and welcoming environment for neurodivergent visitors and their families.

The milestone follows extensive staff training and the introduction of a range of practical, sensory-aware measures across the estate. These include clear visual signage to support wayfinding and reduce anxiety, a designated quiet space for visitors who may need time away from stimulation, complimentary admission for carers, and flexible visiting policies allowing families to explore at their own pace.

In addition, the popular Mayo attraction now hosts dedicated sensory-friendly events throughout the year. These events feature reduced noise levels, adjusted lighting and access to quiet areas, ensuring neurodivergent individuals and their families can enjoy the estate in a relaxed and understanding setting.

The accreditation reflects a strong collaboration between Westport Estate and the wider community through the Westport Autism Friendly Town initiative. The partnership was recently highlighted during a World Autism Awareness Day Walk, which drew more than 120 participants in a show of support for acceptance and inclusion in the town.

Gemma Jordan, General Manager of Westport Estate, said the recognition represents more than a formal award.

“Achieving autism-friendly accreditation is more than receiving a certificate — it’s a promise to our community and our visitors that Westport Estate is a place where everyone belongs. We are honoured to work alongside the Westport Autism Friendly Town partnership and our local community to create meaningful, lasting change and ensure that all families can make wonderful memories here,” she said.

Westport has in recent years built a reputation as an inclusive destination along the Wild Atlantic Way, and this latest accreditation further strengthens its standing as a welcoming location for visitors of all abilities.
