Kylemore Abbey to Host “Old Ireland in Colour” Authors for special talks marking exhibition finale

Kylemore Abbey is delighted to welcome Dr. Sarah-Anne Buckley and Professor John Breslin, the acclaimed authors and curators of the bestselling 'Old Ireland in Colour' series, for a special afternoon of talks exploring the central themes of their celebrated work.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 21 in the Fordham Law Great Hall, where an exhibition of Old Ireland in Colour is currently on Display.

The exhibition, which has been running since April 2025, will draw to a close this March. To celebrate its successful run at Kylemore Abbey, Dr Buckley and Professor Breslin will present two fascinating talks inspired by the exhibition’s key themes: The Women of the West in Old Ireland in Colour and 26 Innovators and Innovations from Past to Present in the West of Ireland.

'In The Women of the West in Old Ireland in Colour', Dr Sarah-Anne Buckley will use striking imagery from the Old Ireland in Colour series to chart the changing roles and lived experiences of women in the West of Ireland from 1852 to 1969. The talk will offer a compelling visual journey through more than a century of social, cultural, and economic change.

Professor John Breslin’s talk, '26 Innovators and Innovations from Past to Present in the West of Ireland', will explore the individuals and ideas that shaped the region from the late nineteenth to the twentieth centuries. Featuring images from Old Ireland in Colour as well as original photos, the presentation will highlight the spirit of innovation that has long defined the West of Ireland.

Since its reopening in 2024, the Fordham Law Great Hall at Kylemore Abbey has had the honour of hosting this landmark exhibition alongside a number of exceptional cultural events. Open to the Abbey’s almost 400,000 annual visitors, the unique space serves as a vibrant cultural hub where Irish art, history, and craft can be experienced by local, national, and international audiences alike.

Admission to the talks and access to the estate are included for those who register in advance here. Early booking is advised for what promises to be an engaging and insightful evening celebrating Ireland’s rich visual and social history.
