Pat Coyne presents a copy of the Davitts GAA book to President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, an aunt of Pat, during a visit to the Áras in recent days.
IT does help having the uncle-in-law as President in Áras an Uachtaráin when you want to deliver a present in person to the top man! It was just a ramble in the park for Davitts stalwart, Pat Coyne, when he decided to visit his aunt, Sabina Higgins, and ‘himself’, Michael D, during Christmas.
Pat, who takes care of the family farm at Cloonrane, Ballindine, has been associated with the Davitts Club over the years and currently helps out with some of the underage teams. He was delighted to make the trip to Dublin and present a copy of the 50th anniversary book, ‘Davitts 1974-12024, the History of a proud Mayo GAA Club’, the labours of extensive research by Joe Reapy.
Sabina and Michael D had a great welcome for Pat and reminisced fondly about the parish and club. Sabina attended Ballindine NS and later spent five years at the Convent of Mercy (now Mount St Michael) in Claremorris. She has maintained strong and abiding links with Ballindine all down the years.
The Davitts 50th Anniversary book got the presidential seal of approval in style and will have a special place of honour for the rest of President Michael D and Sabina’s stay in the Áras in 2025. All associated with Davitts GAA Club are thankful to Pat Coyne for elevating the book to the highest office in the land courtesy of the kindness and generous spirit of Michael D and Sabina.
