Mayo County Councillor admits: 'More pressure needed to tackle dereliction'

Derelict housing remains a problem in Mayo. The matter was discussed during a recent County Council committee meeting. It was acknowledged that the council's completion rate of renovating derelict houses is not matching the needs at the moment.

Fine Gael Councillor Peter Flynn said that there was no question, that progress had been made, but also stressed: "We do need to continue to up the pressure. When you consider the time and resources it takes to build from scratch, and the fact that we have so many houses empty, it seems to be an own goal."

According to official figures there are currently 252 derelict buildings in Mayo.
