A Mayo motorist was caught speeding on National Slow Down Day.

The motorist was found to be doing 72 kilometres per hour in a 60 kilometres per hour zone on the L1331 Lowpark in Charlestown.

In the first 10 hours of ‘National Slow Down Day’, An Garda Síochána detected 481 drivers nationwide travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

Of those detections, 285 drivers were intercepted by Gardaí.

Other examples of high speeds included:

  • 105 kilometres per hour in an 80 kilometres per hour zone on the R148 Pitchfordstown, Kilcock, Kildare.
  • 121 kilometres per hour in a 100 kilometres per hour zone on the N71 Ballinvrinsig, Waterfall, Cork.

An Garda Síochána would like to thank drivers for their compliance during the first ten hours of ‘National Slow Down Day’, making Irish roads safer for all road users.

They continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on Irish roads.
