Funeral details announced for man killed in apartment in Ballina

A man who died in an apartment in Ballina after suffering multiple stab wounds is to have his funeral Mass take place in his native Knock. 

John Francis Casserley, of Tone Street, Ballina and late of Cloondace, Knock, Co Mayo and Woodlawn the Bronx NY, was found dead in an apartment on Ballina’s Tone Street last Wednesday.

Two men were subsequently arrested following the discovery of his body. One man was released from garda custody without charge while another man, Liam O’Leary, was charged with his murder at a special sitting of Castlebar District Court on Friday. 

Mr O’Leary, of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday, November 1.

Mr Casserly’s death has been greeted with shock in both Ballina and Knock. 

He will repose at Marian Funeral Home, Knock (F12 A726) on Monday (Octotber 28) from 6 o’clock with removal at 8 o’clock to the Church of St John The Baptist, Knock. His Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday at 10.30am followed by cremation in Shannon crematorium.

He is survived by his mother Sarah, father Joe, siblings Ann-Marie (Murphy), Martin, Katrina (Haldane) and Seamus, his nieces and nephews Sarah, Christopher, Liam, Amy, Seán, Niall, Ella and Saoirse, sister-in-law Mary and brother-in-law Jeremy, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends.
