Man released without charge and another still in custody following death of John Casserly

John Casserly (59) found dead in apartment in Ballina after suffering multiple stab wounds

A man has been released from custody without charge while another remains in custody following a violent death which occurred in Ballina. 

John Casserly (59) was found dead in an apartment on Tone Street on Wednesday evening after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Two men were subsequently arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. A man in his 20s has been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. A man in his 30s remains in Garda custody. Investigations into the matter remain ongoing. 

Mr Casserly’s death was greeted with shock in the Ballina area, with local councillor Annie May Reape describing it as a ‘human tragedy’. 

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward, particularly anyone with camera footage, including dashcam recordings from road users in the Tone Street area and nearby locations around the time of the incident.
