People standing at the bus stop at Humbert Way in Castlebar
NEWLY-elected county councillor Harry Barrett has said the bus stop at Castlebar’s Humbert Way is ‘no longer fit for purpose and poses a significant risk to public safety’.
Cllr Barrett has expressed concern about the buildup of traffic in the area at busy times, which he said could cause ‘a serious accident’.
The Independent councillor has called for ‘immediate action’ to address the situation and has tabled a motion on the matter before the July meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
“In addition to the traffic concerns, the current facilities fall woefully short in providing adequate cover for passengers, particularly those with disabilities,” he added.
“Castlebar is a growing town, and this problem will only escalate if we do not plan for it immediately.
“Let’s not wait for an accident here. The county town deserves a bus station that is safe, accessible, and built for the future. It's time to get on with it now before it’s too late.”
