MAYO is mourning the passing of well-known hospitality figure, Michael Cadden, who was synonymous with the Asgard pub and restaurant on Westport Quay.
Mr Cadden, of Streamstown, Westport, was well-known throughout Mayo, passed away in the loving care of Mayo Hospice following a long illness.
First opened in 1978, the Asgard won several local and national awards for its top-quality service and delicious food, quickly establishing a reputation as one of the best restaurants in Mayo.
The establishment was visited by various noteworthy figures over the years, including Taoiseach Charlie Haughey, who once flew there by helicopter.
His sons Paul, Mark, and Allen, all followed in their father's footsteps into hospitality and have established successful hospitality businesses.
Alan and Paul run the award-winning Saba and Saba To Go while Mark runs the popular Bar One in Castlebar, which paid tribute to Michael Cadden's legacy.
“His presence was his superpower,” Bar One stated in a tribute on social media.
“Whether you encountered him during his time at Breaffy House Hotel Castlebar, the Asgard Bar and Restaurant Westport, Zest Deli and Restaurant, Castlebar or in later years, here with us at Caddens’ Bar One at Rush Street, we hope you remember him with fondness.”
While suffering with illness, Mr Cadden raised money for Mayo Roscommon Hospice through the sale of ‘In Celebration of Food: A Collection Of Recipes To Enjoy Together’.
Michael was predeceased by his parents Michael and Kathleen, baby son Michael and his sister Maureen.
He will be missed by his loving wife Mary, sons Paul, Mark and Alan, daughters-in-law Sarah, Katie and Gretta, his adored grandchildren Reuben, George, Muire, Carrie, Willow, Ruairí and Sadie, sisters Ena, Breege and Assumpta, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and many friends.
Reposing at his residence will take place on Sunday, June 9, from 4 to 7 pm. His funeral will be arriving at St Mary’s Church, Westport, on Monday, June 10 at 11am followed by Requiem Mass at 12 noon. He will be laid to rest afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
