A local election candidate in the Claremorris Local Electoral Area is due to host a public meeting on immigration in Ballinrobe tomorrow evening (Monday, April 22).

Aontú's Paul Lawless has organised a public meeting to take place in Cornmarket at 8pm after the Maple Youth Centre, which had been due to host the meeting, cancelled the booking.

Mr Lawless said that the issues of healthcare, crime and immigration need to be addressed in the locality.

“The meeting provides a platform for the general public to discuss and raise our concerns together,” Mr Lawless said.

The Knock-based schoolteacher said that people of Ballinrobe were treated ‘despicably’ during protests concerning the proposed accommodation of 50 male asylum seekers at Gannon's Hotel.

The protest was subsequently disbanded after it was announced that families would be housed at the hotel.

Local councillors and TDs criticised the government for its lack of communication with local representatives and residents during the controversy.
