Mayo County Council Road Safety Roadshow returns after four year absence

Over 1,600 Transition Year students descend on the TF Royal Theatre this morning for hard-hitting and graphic roadshow on the terrible consequences of road carnage

Mayo County Council Road Safety Roadshow returns after four year absence

Comedian and social media star Steve Timothy will address students at the roadshow on the importance of road safety.

Mayo County Council's Road Safety Roadshow, which aims to educate teens about the terrible consequences of road carnage, is returning this morning, Thursday, April 11, after a four years absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 1,600 TY students are booked in for the show at the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar. Transition Year students from 26 secondary schools and Youthreach centres will be represented.

Mayo County Council, in association with AXA Insurance, have been working on this event for over six months and its return after four years is a welcome addition in putting the road safety message out there.

Gary Smyth, Acting Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council explained: “The roadshow has been running in Mayo since 2007 and has proved to be very informative. It depicts graphically how a night out ended in tragedy and permanent disability for one driver.

“The Roadshow is aimed at Transition Year students and the objective of the show is to encourage young road users, and those about to commence their driving career, to adopt a more responsible attitude in terms of their own driving behaviour. The consequences should they fail to do so will be clearly and graphically demonstrated”.

This years special guest is Steve Timothy (aka Farmer Michael), comedian and social media star, who himself is now in a wheel chair following a motorcycle accident. The tragedy also saw the death of his pillion passenger. Timothy was under the influence of alcohol on the night in question and he will talk to the students about the consequences of one’s actions on the roads.

During the show, young people will have an opportunity to benefit from presentations made by An Garda Síochána (Garda Michael Gorman of Mayo Roads Policing in Mayo), the National Ambulance Service (Derek Walsh), Mayo Fire Service (Mr Jason Keane), a consultant based within A&E Department in Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar (Professor Paul O'Grady) and a family member of a deceased road traffic accident victim (Leo Leghio).

The show will start at 11am this morning at the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar and The Mayo News will be there to cover this important event.
