A fundraising venture in support of Temple Street Hospital and Acquired Brain Injury Ireland will reach its zenith on Saturday when six people from Mayo will abseil down the 190 foot iconic Skyview Tower in Smithfield, Dublin.
The venture is being coordinated by Aaron McWalter from Feamore, Tulrahan, in association with family and friends. He is son of Bernie (nee Flatley from Cloonmore, Claremorris) and James McWalter.
In a special appeal for support for the venture, Aaron sets out how it all came about: “During Christmas 2020, I suffered an acute spontaneous brain bleed at the age of thirteen. I was living a normal life when I got a headache and fell ill.
“I arrived at Temple Street Hospital in the middle of the night. My parents were given the devastating news that I had a bleed on the brain and I needed emergency life saving surgery. Later that day, the consultant told my parents that they were happy with the surgery. The following ten days were very difficult but I was the lucky one that got to walk away from Temple Street.
“After I was discharged it was hard to adapt and come to terms with what had happened. I was out of school for over eight months, and since I returned I am on reduced hours. As a family impacted by brain injury, this was a very stressful time trying to get everything in place.”
Aaron says he has chosen to fundraise for Temple Street Hospital because of the exceptional care he received and the great support the staff are giving to his family.
“Temple Street Hospital helps children suffering from every kind of illness and injury imaginable. During my stay, I met two lads who both had sustained brain injury through accidents.
“Between us we have discovered that services for children in Ireland with brain injuries are extremely limited. Thankfully we had a good outcome, but for many more children living in Ireland with brain injury they need support to help rebuild their lives.
“I would also like to fundraise for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland in the hope that children impacted by brain injury should be able to receive personalised rehabilitation and support as adults do.”
The abseiling event on the 190 foot Skyview Tower in Dublin on Saturday (April 29) will include Aaron’s dad, James, his uncles Adrian and John, cousins Austin and Cian, and one of his friends, Ethan.
Aaron’s venture had already raised over €16,000 and he is hoping for further support over the coming days. Check out iDonate.ie | Support Aaron McWalter's Fundraiser, for further details.
