Castlebar man in Buckingham Palace to receive MBE
A Castlebar man who has done Trojan work to document those who lost their lives in the World Wars is at Buckingham Palace this afternoon to receive an MBE. Michael Feeney from Castlebar was included in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list and he will receive his coveted medal from Queen Elizabeth. Mr Feeney is the founder of the Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar and he was chosen for the MBE due to his services in promoting UK-Ireland relations.
Leaving Cert and Junior Cert examinations begin across the county
A total of 3,622 students from Co Mayo sat their first Leaving and Junior Certificate exams this morning at schools right across the county. 1,733 Leaving Cert students, 116 Applied Leaving Cert students and 1,773 Junior Cert students have now sat their first exams of a gruelling two weeks schedule. Minister for Education, Mary Coughlan, has wished all 116,000 students across the state the very best of luck with their exams. Moylette desperately unlucky at boxing’s European Championships
Ray Moylette from St Anne’s Boxing Club, Westport bowed out of the European Senior Championships in Moscow earlier this week. The young Islandeady man was desperately unlucky to lose his 64 kg last 16 meeting with Germany’s David Mueller on a double count-back, after their bout finished 5-5. However, several of Moylette Irish colleagues are progressing well in the tournament, with three now assured to bring home a medal of some colour.
