Twelve years in prison for man who admitted raping stepdaughter
A man was sentenced to 12 years in jail yesterday for sexually assaulting and anally raping his young stepdaughter in Leitrim and Mayo over a four year period. The man (37) pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to six sample counts of sexual assault and two counts of anally raping his stepdaughter in their home between 2004 and 2008 from when she was just six years old. Mr Justice Paul Carney said he noted the man’s remorse and early admissions and suspended the final four years of the term.
Mayo literary campaigner awarded with Presidential visit
Well-known Castlebar man and long time literacy campaigner, Ernie Sweeney, will today be a special guest of President Mary McAleese in ArΡs an Uachtarain. Mr Sweeney is being honoured for his voluntary work by the President as he has spent thirty years working on behalf of those with literacy difficulties.
Football tournament to remember former Mayo player Aisling McGing
A special memorial tournament in memory of a former Mayo senior ladies GAA star, who was tragically killed in a road accident in 2003, will be held this weekend. Aisling McGing from Kinuary, Killawalla was a ladies GAA star in Mayo when she died. The games down for decision in the competition, which is played at the Ballintubber GAA headquarters in Clogher are: Saturday, May 1, 6pm: Carnacon v Clonguish (Longford); 7.30pm: Knockmore v Foxrock/Cabinteely (Dublin); May 2, Final 4pm.
